Update Galaxy S4 to Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Official AOKP ROM

AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project. It is a custom ROM with some coolest feature that makes your ROM awesome. With this AOKP ROM on your device, you can do much more with your device in comparison of Original Firmware.

Here in this post, you will learn to update your Galaxy S4 (all models:  C Spire, Cricket, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cell, Verizon) to Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Official AOKP ROM.

Checklist Before Installing Custom ROM

  • First, check your Device Model number from Settings>>About Phone. And make sure it is SGH-I337
  • Your Phone must be rooted and you must install the latest CWM/TWRP recovery before you update. Older version of CWM/TWRP has issues with Android 4.4, so better use the latest versions. TWRP V2.6.3.0 and above, and CWM V6.0.4.3 are recommended.
  • Your Phone must be 80% charge at least.
  • You must backup all your important data.
  • USB Debugging must be On in your device ( To turn it on navigate to Settings>>Manage Application>>Development>>USB Debugging ).

Download both Gapps and ROM file and transfer it to SD Card of your Phone.

FOR CWM USERS

Step 1: Boot Into Recovery Mode

  • Power Off Your Device and wait till it completely turns off.
  • Press and Hold Volume Up+Home+ Power Button together to land your phone in Recovery mode.

Note: In recovery mode, you can use Volume keys to move up and down and power key to select.

Step 2: Creating Nandroid Backup

Note: It’s a optional process but very important. As anything goes wrong you can restore to the original state.
  • Go to Backup and Restore and select Backup.

Step 3: Cleaning up Device 

Note: This process will delete all your apps and settings.
  • Select Wipe Data/ Factory Reset then confirm it.
  • Select Wipe Cache Partition then confirm it.

Step 4: Flashing ROM

  • To flash ROM select Install ZIP then Chose ZIP from SD Card. Then browse your ROM file and select it.

Step 5: Flashing Gapps

  • To flash Gapps select Install ZIP then Chose ZIP from SD Card. Then browse your Gapps file and select it.

Step 6: Rebooting

  • Now from the recovery menu chose Reboot System Now.
Congratulation! You have successfully flash the Android 4.4 KitKat ROM on your Samsung Galaxy S4.

For TWRP Users

Step 1: Boot Into Recovery Mode

  • Power Off Your Device and wait till it completely turns off.
  • Press and Hold Volume Up+Home+ Power Button together to land your phone in Recovery mode.

Step 2: Creating Nandroid Backup

  • Tap Backup and Select all Check Boxes and then Swipe to Confirm backup.

Step 3: Cleaning up Device 

Note: This process will delete all your apps and settings.

  • Tap on Wipe then Tap on Factory Reset then Swipe to confirm Factory Reset. Tap Back
  • Tap Cache then Swipe to Confirm. Tap Back.
  • Tap System then Swipe to Confirm. Tap Back.

Step 4: Installing ROM

  • Tap on Install. Browse your ROM Zip File. Tap on it. Then Swipe to Confirm Flashing.

Step 5: Flashing Gapps

  • Tap on Install. Browse your Gapps Zip File. Tap on it. Then Swipe to Confirm Flashing.

Step 6: Rebooting

  • Go Back then Tap on Reboot then tap on System to reboot your phone.
That’s it. You successfully flashed a custom ROM on your device.

Note: If your device gets stuck or freeze at logo while rebooting. Then do the Factory Reset. Two versions of AOKP ROM is available to say Nightlies and Milestones. Nightlies is an automatic build and update every 3 days. It may contain some bugs. Milestones is the most stable build and release once in a month. So you better check the AOKP Official site for the latest update of ROM file for your Galaxy S4. Or you can download their app AOKPush to notify about the latest release.
